The Waquoit Bay Fish Company

The Waquoit Bay Fish Company offers ocean-inspired fine art captured with stunning realism by me, Mike Palmer - a local Cape Cod artist and marine scientist. The company's primary focus is fish art, which I create based on my firsthand observations from decades of fisheries science and fishing experience. Through my art, I connect people with nature and place by bringing the outside in.

The Waquoit Bay Fish Company name pays homage to the river herring fishery that existed in the Upper Cape Cod region in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1866, the Waquoit River Herring Company was established to harvest river herring from the Childs River, one of several river systems that drain the Waquoit Bay watershed. The 20th century saw the use of the local rivers transition from herring fishing to cranberry growing. The cranberry industry has since abandoned many of the rivers and bogs in the region. These habitats are now being restored and native plant and animal species like alewive and sea-run brook trout are returning. The Waquoit Bay Fish Company name honors the region’s heritage while celebrating its rebirth.

The company name also conveys a passion for fish and the larger natural world. The Waquoit Bay Fish Company brand is a reflection of a life spent exploring art, natural sciences, cultural history, and the outdoors. Like those before us, and those that will come after us, we walk the woods, comb the shores, fish the streams, paddle the waters, and enjoy the life that the region affords us. I created the Waquoit Bay Fish Company to be able to share this with you. I’m grateful that you’ve visited.
